This is an authentic vintage tribal Persian Shiraz rug hand-knotted in Persia with an all wool pile with abrash on a wool foundation. There is some very minor wear on the pile and a small repair, see photos, this rug is in very good condition.
Shiraz, the capital city of the province of Fars in Iran. These carpets are woven in Shiraz and the surrounding villages. Shiraz is home to the Qashqai tribe and the designs in Shiraz carpets are comparable to the Qashqai, Khamseh, Basseri, Afshar, Abadeh, and Luri designs. Since the weavers are using fixed looms the rugs tend to be larger and often coarser than their tribal counterparts. Shiraz rugs are not often very finely knotted, with both Qashqai and Abadeh both having a finer knot, the design is geometric, sometimes featuring a pole medallion in the center. Shiraz carpets use red and brown colors and often use diamond-shaped lozenges as the primary motif. Some pieces feature Cyrus’ white horse and the Shiraz is the only rug to depict nightingales that come in the form of angularly shaped birds that are said to symbolize contentment and happiness. Shiraz rugs are not usually made in a large factory, with the majority of them being woven by home weavers and taken into the main bazaar to be sold.
